for me, this day was in the long run, a helpful one. However it was also a negative one. the first half of the talk we had with Fig Taylor, was really helpful, she was blunt and to the point with tips and tricks and what NOT to do when starting our careers after our degree is over, and kept name dropping her book (which evidently worked- because i bought it when i got home) and it really does have a heap of addresses and people you can contact in the industry. overall, i enjoyed the first half and felt slightly overwhelmed, yet positive!
the second half however, didn’t go as well for me. we each had individual crits with Fig on our portfolios, we got split into groups of similar skill sets, when it came to my crit, she looked through it, very briefly and commented on how varied it was-which seemed to be a negative comment because she had specified how a targeted portfolio is more likely to attract clients. she commented on how id be better looking at internships, which was a comment i took negatively initially However, on reflection, an internship might help me gain more skills that clients like, more advanced skills and in house experience ready for when i start my own career
Overall, having somebody pick apart my portfolio, initially annoyed me- however on deeper reflection it was ulitatly really helpful, one because it made me want to prove that i dont need to lean on the idea of getting and internship, i can and will start my own career as an illustrator and i dont need to just ‘draw’ to do that. and it help me think about ways i can design my portfolio to be more eyecatching to clients but still contain a varies style.
